Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy who is currently teaching as a full-time Professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim is one of the leading pianists of his generation. At University he passed all his examinations with highest distinction and since he was a child he has been winning an impressing amount of top-prizes in international piano competitions throughout the world. He constantly expands his worldwide concert activity. The chief editor of the important German Music Magazine Fono Forum elected him „Upcoming Artist of the year“. In the famous Pianists Encyclopedia „Pianisten-Profile“ Ingo Harden points out Schmitt-Leonardy‘s artistic authority and singular musical consequence and Knut Franke one of the most respected and wellknown critics of our time compared Mr. Schmitt-Leonardy‘s „sovereign culture of sound“ with the legendary Vladimir Horowitz. In another review (Schumann recording) of the german magazine Fono Forum, a critic compares Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy‘s powerful approach to the legendary Svjatoslav Richter. The acknowleged Magazine Piano News praised Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy’s Chopin recordings and compared his playing to the two piano legends Krystian Zimerman and Grigory Sokolov.

Furthermore he has twice been awarded the culture prize of the municipality Schwalbach (1987/1989), the “fine arts-scholarship” of the federal state Saarland (1994) and twice the culture prize of the district Saarlouis (1997 and 2011).

He has realized radio and television broadcasts in Germany (SR, SDR, Radio Bremen, SWR Baden Baden, Deutschlandradio Berlin), Italy (RAI), Switzerland (DRS), Slowenia (RTV) and the Philippines (BMG). He has also published CD’s for Label ebs (Bayer records) with works from Tchaikovsky, Gershwin and Kabalevsky and for Label Brilliant Classics with works from Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Rachmaninoff/Warenberg (World Premiere Recording of Rachmaninoff's 2nd symphony in a transcription for piano and orchestra which has been recommended by the German newspaper "DIE ZEIT", the radio stations "Bayerischer Rundfunk" and Saarländischer Rundfunk" by the magazines FonoForum (Germany) and Diapason (France) and many international radio stations on all continents. The leading German music magazine FonoForum awarded his first solo album (Kabalevsky) five stars (highest possible evluation). It was also twice nominated for the “Deutscher Schallplattenpreis”. His recording of the complete Brahms piano variations for Label brilliant classics. The French magazine PIANO awarded it with the CD-prize “Coup de Coeur”. The polish magazine Muzycka21 awarded it five stars. His recent recordings with Chopin Sonatas (complete), Preludes (complete), Ballades (complete) and Impromptus (complete) have again been highly acclaimed by the international press. Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy has been elected by the leading german music magazine as “Upcoming artist of the year”.

In the past years his students have won numerous first prizes in international and european piano competitions. Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy serves as judge in many International Piano Competitions (e.g. International German Piano Award (Chairman), Concours International de Piano d'Épinal, International Piano Competition Thailand, International Piano Competition ClaviCologne, International Piano Competition MozARTE) and was invited to give masterclasses for the Amiata Piano Festival”, “Musica Viva” (Italy), for the University of Alberta Canada, for the Piano Highschool Beijing, for the Lang Lang International Music Foundation in Munich, Barcelona, Vienna and Warsaw, for the Festival International de Musique de Dinard (F), for the “Camerata dell’Arte Foundation” and “Opusfest” (Philippines), for the Festival “Musiktage Saarlouis” (Germany), for the Academy of cultural affairs Saarlouis, at the Conservatory in Cluj (Romania), in the course of the “International Piano Festival Malaysia”. Between 2010 and 2017 he held a chair for piano teaching at the “University of Music and Performing Arts Munich” and since 2017 after rejecting a job offer from the Hanns Eisler Hochschule in Berlin he is working as a full-professor at the “University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim". Since 2007 Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy is also teaching at the prestigious “École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot” in Paris (France). He founded a broad musical mentoring project"WSL-Masterclass" in which he works with a fine selection of the most outstanding international piano talents.
